Paper Artistry

For this type or artwork, I create delicate folds, cuts, tears, and burns for deliberate shaping. The burns a done with a candle. This is  gives birth to form and color.

 The paper is archival, meaning it will not fade or change color and is long lasting; "archival".  I will often incorporate paper I make my handand from cotton, linen, and mulberry threads. All of this  captures shadow and light to give life to a reaction I have experienced.

Do not read this outload, he may hear you! The fox is not just the subject of this artwork, but he is the beginning of the story. The longer you look at him, the more you are drawn into his world. You wonder what he is so intently watching from the safety of the dark forest night?

 Do you watch? Do you wait? Do you hide? Sometimes it is good to watch, wait and even hide, until the time is right.

The longer you look at him, the more you are a brought into his world, as you continue to wonder;

“what he is so intently watching?” He is not alone as the simply the subject of this work, for he is also with someone else or something else at the end of his gaze.

Now he has drawn you into his world and you are part of his story waiting for his night to unfold, and perhaps yours.

Should you hold your breath, so he doesn’t become aware of your presence?

“The Watcher” presents a fox created from sculpted layers of shaped, and free flowing papers and fibers that combine both traditional and handmade paper;  made with linen and cotton fibers to create a strength and sense of movement.

The fox’s texture holds time as a quiet stealth like moment, with each fragment of paper torn, cut, and molded to form the sharp, and the gentle flowing contours of his fur. These layers build a to create a three-dimensional presence that invite you to want to touch the fox’s fur and feel the intensity.

Color plays a vital role in shaping the composition, as he is a fox of rich intensions! He has reds, and  oranges that blend with shadows of blue, intentionally violating traditional color theory.  But that’s ok, because this fox has his own serious intentions and purpose within his being. No theories. The colors of white, and black, create the opposites of day and night yet still fold into the softness of his night, presenting a visual scene of warmth and awareness. But who is he watching? Could it be you, or are you the fox?
